From question answering to spoken dialogue: towards an information search assistant for interactive multimodal information extraction

چکیده
This paper gives an overview of issues related to extending simple question answering (QA) with dialogue capabilities, when designing a multimodal interactive information extraction system for a large, though restricted, domain. We present the way in which these issues are approached in the IMIX program. The IMIX demonstrator system, under development in this program, may be considered the most difficult case of QA, answering non-factoid questions in a large domain, and accepting speech input as well. We describe our approach to the addition of dialogue capabilities to this system. We will look at QA from a dialogue system perspective and from a HCI perspective, and consider the consequences of our choice of interaction metaphor, the ‘information search assistant’.

Addressing How-to Questions using a Spoken Dialogue System: a Viable Approach?
In this document, we illustrate how complex questions such as procedural (how-to) ones can be addressed in an interactive format by means of a spoken dialogue system. The advantages of interactivity and in particular of spoken dialogue with respect to standard Question Answering settings are numerous. First, addressing user needs that do not necessarily arise in front of a computer; moreover, a...
متن کاملAn Evaluation of Spoken and Textual Interaction in the RITEL Interactive Question Answering System
The RITEL project aims to integrate a spoken language dialogue system and an open-domain information retrieval system in order to enable human users to ask a general question and to refine their search for information interactively. This type of system is often referred to as an Interactive Question Answering (IQA) system. In this paper, we present an evaluation of how the performance of the RI...
متن کاملA New Statistical Model for Evaluation Interactive Question Answering Systems Using Regression
The development of computer systems and extensive use of information technology in the everyday life of people have just made it more and more important for them to make quick access to information that has received great importance. Increasing the volume of information makes it difficult to manage or control. Thus, some instruments need to be provided to use this information. The QA system is ...
متن کاملLinguistically Motivated Question Classification
In this paper we describe a question interpretation module designed as a part of a Question Answering Dialogue System (QADS) which is used for an interactive quiz application. Question interpretation is achieved in applying a sequence of classification, information extraction, query formalization and query expansion tasks. The process of a question classification is performed based on a domain-...

We present the Dutch IMIX research programme on multimodal interaction, speech and language technology. We discuss our contributions to this programme in the form of two research projects, IMOGEN and VIDIAM, and the technical integration of the various modules developed by IMIX subprojects to build a demonstrator that shows the project’s aims and achievements. In this paper we pay special atten...
